What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a mental healthcare professional who has the training and clinical skills to evaluate behaviour, with the aim of alleviating emotional and mental suffering. A psychologist will often focus on different types of psychotherapy in order to help someone battling with addiction.

If a psychologist suspects that medication of some sort is needed, they will refer the person to a psychiatrist, because they do not have the power to prescribe medication.

Is a psychologist right for me?

If you want to better understand the behavioural patterns and issues which complicate the addiction and recovery process, then a psychologist is right for you.

Psychologists can see clients one-on-one or in group settings, often with other people struggling with the same types of addiction.
